Hello JV:

Nice to know you are still hard at work trying to improve your wonderfull program. Here are some of my ideas on your latest offerring:

1. Cosmetics: Perhaps this is just personal preference, but I feel that the program icon (on the desktop) is less intuitive and less visually apealing than in the 2006 version. (The same icon is used for "One click Cleaner" and because it is done in a different style it seems to look out of place among the other icons in the main program menu - I know you are working on changing that). The icon for "Disk Defragmenter" is also not descriptive and thus also looks out of place. Also what happened to the Cookie Manager and Privacy Protector?

2. Functionaly, how is your defragmenter different/better than the one in Win XP?

3. Sofware Manager: -just like in the 2006 version, for a fair number of program entries their "Intallation path" and/or "Main executable" are shown as "N/A". Since the whole point of this tool is to weed out the junk, if the name of the program is not descriptive - the user has no idea what it is, where it is and thus can't decide what to do about it. If there is any way to improve detection and description of entries it would be a great step forward.

In some cases the path is listed as: "C:\PROGRA~1\Directory Name\". In others "Program Files" is writen in full, why the inconsistency?

4. Registry Compactor: -'Full registry backups (files with extension ".bak_jv16pt") of the compacted root hives are stored in the same directories as the original root hive storage files.'

Does that mean that what is backed up are the files as they were before the compaction?

5. Registry backup and restore: -it would be realy great to have a SEPARATE tool for backing up the registry (as a whole) and to be able to save it to a folder of user's choice (not to the same directories as the original root hives). Then it would be much easier to restore the registry when necessary to a particular back up date. This functionality is currently available by a freeware tool: "ERUNT". http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/index.htm

6. BUG: I ran the Registry Compactor twice and both times the system would not restart after - it started to hang during shut down.

Although "Abort" is misleading. In Comp Sci, the term implies an error or malfunction. I just want/need to tell the tool(s) to stop populating the list, without throwing it away ..

A few online dictonaries define abort as:

"To intentionally and prematurely terminate an active computer program or command."

and

"The unintentional premature termination of a process or program in an electronic environment caused by operator, software, or system error or miscommunication."

If you don't like the word abort, what would you use instead?

Besides, jv16PT.exe "process" doesn't close either. You have to kill it manually in Windows Taskmanager.

It seems to me that this happens only if the "Message Windows" is closed as last one. When the "Message Window" is closed first, before closing the "Tools-" and "Main Window" then "jv16.exe"-Process is closing normally.

By this way - thanks for the good work of Macecraft team and also to the very active Beta-Tester-Community

I think Abort is good.

An other thing would be to rename it to Abort process or something.

But i think abort is just fine.

Stop or Terminate arn't good.

Stop looks like No don't do that... STOP.

And terminate looks like Kill this thing.

Installation of Beta 3 successful on Vista 32 RTM

Cache update (initial) took 41 mins to complete (I have 13 drives, approx 510k files).

I do not remember any of the previous installations (XP SP2) taking more than a few minutes - less than 5. I had smaller HDDs then, but more logical drives.

The File Cache update hasn't been changed, so the changes of your software and hardware should explain the difference.

But 41 minutes is too much, I'll try to change something in order to make the cache creation faster even on computers with a lot of hard drives and files...

Here are the results of bug fixing of the Beta3 done since the last report. Notice that the Reported by field means the user who was the first to report the problem. If there are errors in these reports, please let me know since these are used when it is decided which users qualify for the free personal license.

Issues found by beta testers

Issue: Each time the "Messages Window" is open while and after running a Tool (e.g. 1Click Cleaner) and you "exit" the PowerTools Main Window (i.e. you're leaving the PT) , the "Messages Window" does not close. You have to do it manually.

Status: Fixed in Beta4 and later. The Message Window should be closed when its parent window closes, except the Message Window will be merged to another Window if a new message has just been added to Message Window. This ensures you don't miss a message if you happen to close the parent window almost the same time a new message is shown.

Issue: When Abort is clicked, that fact should be logged in the message box.

Issue: Many tools relating to files (e.g. Duplicate finder) won't accept CD or DVD drives as source directories, instead they show a "Directory X:\ does not exist".

Issue: File Cache update takes a very long time (over 30 minutes) if the computer has a very large number of files and hard disk drives.

Cancel is in my eyes linked to the Ok button.

Cancel is also something like 'Are you sure Yes/No'.

So Abort seems the best in my eye's.

JV16 - what about my requests regarding the registry compactor, that is reboot option at the end of the process and adding it to the automation tool.

An option to reboot the computer automatically after a registry compact has now been included to Beta4. I don't know if it will be added to Automation Tool, perhaps.

When I open File Tool, select Help->About, then close "File tool" then close JV16, the text box and the "About image" remain on the desktop and the following error message appears in the message window

Access Violation at adress 004F2183 in module 'jv16PT.exe'. Read of address 0000002C

I have also experienced the issue when you close Jv16 it remains running minimized in the windows taskbar and needs to be closed using task manager.

Also, no matter how I configure the desktop icon to start JV16, JV16 almost always opens minimized to the windows task bar. Right clicking does not always produce the menu to restore, close, minimize, maximize etc.

I found the following misbehaviour:

Automation Tool:

1) Set "Start type" to the last option ( ... log in to this computer)

2) go to "Options" and then go back to "Start type"

3) "Start type" settings jumped back to the second option (... from Start menu)

4) do again step 1)

5) do again step 2)

6) "Start type" settings jumped now back to the third option (... Quick Launch bar)

...

Great, also how about having all hives selected by default, or allowing preferences to be saved on this tool as well.

Regarding the whole abort/stop discussion, i believe the abort is serving better then stop or cancel, seems like a more powerful and accurate word for me.
