jv16 PowerTools 2007 Beta2 is now released, you can download it from:
http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/betas/jv16pt_setup_2007_Beta2.exe
(if the link doesn't work, it means the beta testing for this version has already ended)
Warning
Do not install this program over any previous version of jv16 PowerTools, always install beta versions to a new directory. This product version is not an official release, it will contain bugs and can cause harm to your computer. Do not download or install this program unless you are willing to take the risk and understand what beta testing means.
On Beta Testing
All beta testers who submit valuable feedback, such as bug reports, performance reports, improvement ideas etc, will receive a free personal license for the product after it has been officially released. Simply installing and testing the application doesn't mean that you would automatically receive a free license, free licenses are issued only to those who submit valuable feedback.
General Release Notes
* The program starts by default in the Debug Mode. It means the program works very slowly and saves a log file to your Desktop. If something unexpected happens (e.g. a crash or hanging) save the debug log and report the problem, you might be asked to send the debug log for further analysis.
* While running in Debug Mode (enabled by default), you will see some new buttons and features in the user interface. This is normal.
* Do not start to translate the English.lng yet, the language interface will still change.
* This version still lacks a few new icons (for example to the new One Click Cleaner).
* This version does not run under any Win9x system, such as Windows 95, 98, 98 SE nor ME. The program doesn't start due to a missing NT-only DLL file.
* The Beta2 contains a new trial system, it should allow you to test the program even if you have once used your free trial on any previous versions of jv16 PowerTools.
Changes since Beta1
* About 40 bugs fixed
* Disk Defragmenter should now work better although it is not yet perfect (as in it can't always defrag a disk drive perfectly, it shouldn't delete any data or anything of that sort). One could say that the Disk Defragmenter of Beta1 was 60% working, the Disk Defragmenter of Beta2 should be 80% working. Also many stability issues of the Disk Defragmenter are now fixed in Beta2.
* Most important file and registry removal features now report to the user for errors, such as if a registry entry cannot be removed with the Registry Cleaner. The implementation of these changes was rapid and therefore some errors in removing items can occur, please report if you notice any.
* The MRU/History Cleaner is almost fully re-coded giving it much more power to detect MRU and history data of applications. It contains both a built-in support for some 300 most common applications, and a heuristic analyzer which is able to detect MRU/history data of many other applications as well. The tool now detects MRU/history data from both the registry and file system. Since this feature has been dramatically changed, please be extra careful with it.
Special Testing Required
If you have had problems with jv16 PowerTools 2006 or 2007 Beta1's Registry Cleaner crashing or hanging please test the Registry Cleaner of Beta2. First try it normally, and then with the Disable optimizations option checked from the Registry Cleaner window.
Development schedule
RC1 (Release Candidate 1) version is expected to be released after 3-5 beta versions, the final version should be ready after 1-3 RC's.
The Beta3 should be relesed within two weeks. There is no need to resend any of your bug reports if the bug you reported from Beta1 is still present in Beta2. This is because the main emphasis of Beta2's development has been in fixing the Disk Defragmenter and updating the MRU/History Cleaner. The main bug fixing phase starts now, after the release of Beta2.
Please send all your feedback and bug reports to this thread (use the Post Reply button).
Thank you very much.
