When installing jv16 PT 2007 beta1, one reads the following:

jv16 PowerTools contains a feature that allows you to see all the program messages in a handy message box, or in a seperate dialog window as normally in Windows.



 O Show messages in dialog Windows
 O Show messages in message box (recommended)

   Display detailed data from the program's core (recommended for advanced users)

Of course you can also change these settings from the Settings Window later.

Well, maybe I am missing something, but I have searched in vain that possibility to change that "messages appearance" in the Settings Window.

I guess jv16 has forgotten to include that option under the Interface settings :

Here's a workaround for the missing "Show Messages ..." option described here and here.

Go to ...\Settings\Interface.dat (under the directory wherever you installed jv16 PT 2007 beta1 in).

Open that file (with e.g. Notepad) and go to the header .

There you can modify "Boxes=False (or True)" and/or "AdvancedData=False (or True)". :

But nevertheless jv16 should implement the option in the Settings Window under Interface :

Just installed jv16 PowerTools 2007 Beta1 on Windows Vista Business but am not using it to clean the registry yet. If and when I do it will be with the most recent jv16 PowerTools on the web site (not 2007 Beta1.) It runs pretty smooth on Vista. Good job jv16!! I am not sure if running both of PowerTools versions (2007Beta1 and 2006) would be a good way to Beta test (at least on Vista for now.) I get the "clean" install feeling just using jv16 PowerTools 2007 Beta1 alone on Vista Business. When I need to clean the registry I'll uninstall PowerTools 2007 Beta1 and install 2006 then reinstall 2007 Beta1 or 2007 RC1.

New user to jvPowerTools.

On fresh, first clean install; an error message appears referring to the license. While the program goes through the initial learning stages to guide the user, scanning the cache (highly recommended) it will crash without error.

Defragment utility reports excessive fragmentation when there is no fragmentation or next to no fragmentation.

jvPowerTools reports 70% fragmentation.

Windows defrag reports 2% total fragmentation, 4% file fragmentation.

PerfectDisk reports 1.0% file fragmentation and 1.4% directory fragmentation.

Defragmentation in progress, the progress bar goes to the end after one minute. It would report 99.50% complete, and is currently reporting progress of 98.24%; counting backwards.

Software Manager GUI bug:

Success rate, Show UninstStr, Find no paths (buttons) Specifically the "Find no paths" button partially covers the "Custom Uninstall" button on the right when the window is opened as default size (not maximized).

If you notice also they are not aligned vertically with the buttons on the right.

File Cleaner Concern:

Is the Safe Mode scan supposed to detect the following file extensions by default?:

.CAT, .INF, .GDP, .XML, .EXP, .INX, .ICC (these files make up the device driver backups I have for my aunt's HP Photosmart 8200 Series)

File Tool Suggestion:

The "More Functions" button will disappear if I move my mouse outside of its area (to the left) but if I just move the cursor onto the white area w/ grid lines it will not vanish, but on double click (and only on the white area) it will go away. I think this should be changed for to vanish regardless of where the mouse is moved and instantly once the cursor leaves the box.

Directory Finder Bug:

When I search my C:\ for obvious folder names like "Documents" and "Windows" or even "jv16" it doesn't appear to actually do any searching and shows no results instantly.

The "More Functions" button here *does* vanish on single click, unlike in the File Tool.

Disk Defragmenter Bug:

The "Generating image, please wait..." progress bar will freeze during some attempts, give an "access violation" error message and freeze the progress bar during the next attempt. At one point, the program would not let me do it again and the "Analyze" button fades out.

Some error message examples are as follows:

: Access violation at address 03081C3B. Read of address 6B088CBE

: Access violation at address 0040520C in module 'jv16PT.exe'. Read of address FFFFFFFF

: Access violation at address 004043B8 in module 'jv16PT.exe'. Read of address FFFFFFFF

: Access violation at address 7C92AE22 in module 'ntdll.dll'. Read of address 7FFFFFFF

: Invalid pointer operation (most common error)

The error messages are consistent with the 3rd and 4th analyze attempt.

Diskeeper 2007 reports 219 fragmented files and 2% fragmentation. jv16 2007 reports 237 and 3.57% fragmentation.

Disk Defragmenter > Filesystem View GUI bug:

It looks like another row of the HDD space is being displayed but is mostly hidden at the bottom.

History/MRU Cleaner Suggestion:

I would also like to suggest that a status bar showing the key location in the registry and "Jump to registry" button be added.

Clicking Abort in the Disk Defrag utility does not abort.

Hello, new user here,

I started the Registry Cleaner and maximized the window to make selections easier.

I fixed all the items I selected and when I restored the window to it's previous size, I discovered the error messages:

I would like it better if somehow I get an error indication when the Window is maximized.

What do you think?

While running with debug on, just resize the tool window -- PT will remember the last size used.

No. Safe mode looks for "*.tmp; *.temp; *.gid; *.chk; *.~*;" -- a File Cleaner safe mode scan of my entire C:\ drive listed no files with those extensions ... In any case, don't check for removal any lines you are not certain are safe to remove.

Perhaps you have one or both of the "Skip ..." boxes checked under the Options tab ...

Such an option should be available -- probably in Beta 2 -- when jv updates the Settings tool. Look here.

The downside is you will have to go through an "OK" response for each error.

Best of both worlds:

Resize the results window so it occupies most of the top of the screen, leaving the bottom part for the message box ... PT remembers your last resizing of the results window.

Couldn't hurt -- it would let you know that you need to "unmaximze" the window to see the message box.

Registry Cleaner has no "Abort" button -- I guess you used the "Close" button.

In any case, I noticed some strange results when I "aborted" via the "Close" button. I did not get a 100% CPU loop, but the following repeatable behavior happened:

Behavior:
1. Started PT, launched Registry Cleaner, started Registry Cleaner with "Quick select -- normal" -- then, after a moment, clicked "Close" on the results window -- results window went away, but the message box remained.

2. "Xed" the RC tool window (message box still remained)

3. "Xed" the PT main window (message box still remained and PT still showed on the task bar)

4. "Xed" the message box (message box went away but PT still showed on the task bar)

5. Repeatedly clicked the PT item on the task bar -- it just repeatedly "displayed" a null window -- jv16PT.exe still showed as a process in Task Manager

6. Right click closed the PT task bar item -- jv16PT.exe finally went away

Speculation:

The message box is a subtask of the results window. There is benefit to leaving the message box visible when the results window is aborted, but the box should be terminated when the tool window is ended, or refreshed if "Start" on the tool window is clicked again.
