just installed jv16 2005 - bought license on last version

i had to do complete system restore on my pc & lost everything, i had the previous version of jv16, but when i came back to this site to reinstall it, i noticed that this new 2005 version was available. i downloaded what i think is the 30 day trial version of the new 2005 edition, i still have my e-mail saved in aol where my license download was e-mailed to me when i purchased the license, but when i downloaded the license after installing the 2005 edition of jv16, the license download wants to know what program to open the xbin file extension with & i chose the option of searching the web to determine what program to use to open this type file extension, & nothing seems to recognize the xbin file extension, what do i need to do to be able to apply my purchased license to this trial version of jv16 2005, or is my license that i purchased only good with the previous version which was the most up-to-date version when i bought it ?

The license of jv16 PowerTools 1.4.1 doesn't work with the jv16 PowerTools 2005 because they are two different products. You can download the jv16 PowerTools 1.4.1 from: http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/jv16pt_setup_141.exe

If you wish to use the jv16 PowerTools 2005 you must purchase an upgrade license which costs only $5.95.

In order to use the license file (license.xbin) you don't need to open or run it, just save it to your computer, e.g. to your Desktop and the product will automatically find it.

This is the reason why so many people use cracks, we legally buy a license and a few months later you improve a few things make others look different and you call it a new program.

There are VERY FEW PEOPLE LEFT STILL PAYING FOR SOFTWARE just think if you really want to lose us as well, cause it´s very easy to get a crack, easier than paying every year for a new license.

Dont get greedy, dont go Bill Gates on your software activate prior licenses for your new software or we will definately go crackwise.

What do car manufacturers do each year? Do they give their slightly modified "new" cars for free to people who bought it last year? Or, do even any major software companies simply give out new products for old customers for free?

No they don't. In fact, does any real business do that?

The jv16 PowerTools 2005 is quite much improved compared to the old version. It's true we also changed the user interface, that was because the old user interface wasn't very Windows like (i.e. to what many users are used to) nor the old interface couldn't really be extended to contain all the new features that were added.

I would also like to point out that the policy we had about releasing a new product version (i.e. a new product) about once a year was written in our online store when we still sold jv16 PowerTools 1.4.x. The reason why the notice is now removed is simple, we no longer plan to release a new product version that often. Unlike most other software companies, if I may add.

Of course I'm not sure, but this it the very first comment saying our $5.95 upgrade price for old cusomers is being greedy, all other comments have been quite the opposite.

The normal price is $29.95 thus old customers receive a $24 discount. That is a 80% discount (if I got the maths right) for old customers. Could you tell me which other real software company gives discounts of this size to their old customers?

If you want to get the new version for free, I can't stop you from stealing it. Nor can I stop you from stealing a new car if you want that too. But when you are downloading a pirated version of a product, who is being greedy then. The company who employs people and supports the local community by paying taxes, or the person who wants to use the product without paying anything?

Of course, not all people have the money to buy for example our products. That's why we offer free personal licenses for our beta testers and other people who help us to develop our products, either by reporting problems or by suggesting great new features. JV, you're wasting your breath. There are people who believe all software development ought to be gratis and everyone trying to earn a living is in the same league as Bill Gates. Those unfortunates are commonly referred to as morons (best case) or idiots (worst case). You can distinguish the idiots from morons very easily. The latter all have computers infested with malware from downloading cracks.

1.- Me and all of the rest of paying costumers that demand real improvements on a program before paying again for it, and beforere going crackwise.

2.- Or the people paying each year for MINOR updates on a program without questioning if any change were really needed or usefull.

3.- Te people that sell this MINOR updates not caring for paying costumers

If you don't like the new product you don't have to purchase it, the product you originally purchased still works.

Also, as I said, we don't have the new product version per year policy any longer. Quite the opposite, we are at the very moment working on a new jv16 PowerTools 2005 update which brings many new features to the product, and this update is free for the current license owners.

I don't quite understand why you first say that the improvements between the two product versions (jv16 PT 1.4.1 vs 2005) are minor, but you still want to get the latest version? If the changes are, in your opinion, so minor, why don't you just use the jv16 PowerTools 1.4.1 you already have?

I don't object to the $5.95 upgrade charge as jv16 PT has saved me hours of frustration correcting other programs errors. People should be rewarded for their effort. Even if the major changes are bug fixes to make a program more stable etc..

What I do object to is that the installation runs, removes the old version (1.14.1) - doesn't tell me it is going to do this and then leaves me with a 30 day trial version! Also it doesn't warn me that I need to get an upgrade license or where to find it! Or that I am wasting my time hunting down the old email with the xbin attachment!

So at the very least can you provide a link to the page where I can obtain an upgrade license?

Hello Alex,

The installion procedure of PowerTools 2005 shows you a default path, but you might change this by entering, i.e., a different folder name. So there would be no problem to keep even the 1.4 version.

The page you can buy your Upgrade license you find under Buy online at the top of the main page.

The adress is: http://www.macecraft.com/eshop/.

Just click on the right side to pop-up the different posibilities and choose the upgrade license.

At the second step you will be asked the order number you should find on the E-Mail you got purchasing PT 1.4.

The product's installation program doesn't warn you that you are installing the new version over the old one, you are correct on that. There is no warning because the installation program we use doesn't support it (at least as far as I know).

But if you use the jv16 PowerTools 1.4.1's Internet Update feature you will see:

"The latest version is: 1.5.xxx (upgrade, don't install over old version)".

Also, if you have lost the original jv16 PowerTools 1.4.1 you had, simply download it back from: http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/jv16pt_setup_141.exe

and contact support@macecraft.com and they can resend your old license back to you.

Just a small note about the warning messages:-

Yes the web upgrade does say "don't install over 1.14.1" but once you launch the upgrade it says "you have a newer version of jv16 and will not need to uninstall prior to the upgrade" (or words to that effect).

So hence the reason I got in this mess in the first place - assuming the upgrade bug had been addressed!!
