Hi jv16 and everyone,

I'm having some trouble with jv16 PowerTools 2006 RC2 (Beta). When I compact my registry, I get an error,

"Error! Failed to compact "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM"!

I never get this problem with jv16 PowerTools 2006 Beta 3. I hope it's not my PC that is having the problem, it's been running great.

Sorry to say that stating that the problem wasn't evident in Beta 3 means little. The only way to prove that it doesn't exist in Beta 3 is to actually re-install Beta 3 and run it. If there is no problem with it then OK- there is a problem in the latest Beta.

Your Registry could have been corrupted between Beta 3 and the latest Beta which is why the latest causes a problem with the compaction. Even if the compaction does not work, your computer will still boot and work properly - it's just that you cannot compact.

I've been there, done that which is why I am suggesting that you re-install Beta 3 and see if compaction works under that Beta.

No need to reinstall beta3 ... this dialog occurred at the end of that beta:

The compression is not simulated on purpose but it's a bug in the program. The compression works properly but replacing the current registry with the compressed one always fails. However, this (and all the other bugs) should be fixed in the next version.

And we know it is not yet fixed in RC2:

FYI: The bugs of the Registry Compactor are still unfixed in the RC2, they will be fixed for the next version. There are also a few other unfixed known bugs in RC2.
