Thanks for the information. I apologize for posting in the wrong location. If this can be moved to the right spot, please feel free to do so.
The crash occurs after opening the file tool, adding a file, activating the check box, selecting find and replace, entering the search words, entering the replacment words, clicking OK, getting to the next screen. That screen shows the search words found and the words after replace. Then click Replace and it hangs - not responsive. Have to use Task Manager to stop it and Word will not open until that completes.
I have Windows XP Pro SP2.
Interestingly, after reproducing the foregoing several times so I could accurately report the steps, the program failed to find the Search Words. In other words, after I enter the search words and the replacement words, it goes to the next screen but did not report finding the search words.
I kept trying, and finally got it to find the search words. It showed the replace words and the "found from" and then I clicked on Replace and it seemed to work. Except now I cannot open the word file that I used as the guinea pig. Word tells me that now "The document name or path is not valid" and suggests checking file permissions for the file or drive or using the file-open dialogue to locate the file. The file appears to be there but will not open.
