Back in 2004, I also wrecked some Word files (test ones :) ). At that time, the help files did not contain this warning:

"Find and Replace

... Of course, you should only use it with ascii text files, such as txt or html files." ... (from the 2005 jv16pt manual)

I figured it out anyway -- good old trial and error. I suspect jv is now going to put a warning in the tool itself.

Backups created by Start Menu Fixer show a type of "Many files" -- it would be more informative if the type were something like "Shortcuts changed/removed by Start Menu Fixer" ...

When you right click on a backup line in the Backup Tool window, then select "List backed up files," you get the list in an informational pop-up.

Problem: if there are a lot of files in the list, the pop-up is taller than the screen. Example: a custom backup of jv16's Settings. Mine had 93 files (per windows explorer -- can't tell from the pop-up).

Question: (not related to the problem) what sort of things go in the "Other backups" tab? Perhaps cookies and history backups? Never mind -- I have found the answer -- it is yes.

Not at all redseujac. The point is, it should have been changed long ago!

A support for IE might be added in the future.

There was even a chance to change the pop-up message before beta3 (released 30 Jan 2006).

History Manager loop ... some bad backups ... some questions

All the tests below were run back-to-back and started this way:

-- called History Manager -- moved all history items present in Unknown to Keep and Remove using White and Black lists -- hit Start -- backup created --- Index.dat in each case looks OK --

#1 -- backup has a Strings.dat containing 610 strings -- ended normally ...

#2 -- had to kill this one -- HM & Main window did not respond -- PT using nearly 100% of one HTT CPU, 5 to 10% of the other -- backup has a Cookies.dat of 0 size, a Files.dat of 0 size, an Entries.reg with only header info, and a Strings.dat where HM was looping -- it has 23 valid-looking strings and a large number of empty strings -- was at string 6902= when killed -- header says Strings=6903 ...

#3 -- backup has a Strings.dat containing 95 strings -- ended normally ...

#4 -- had to kill this one too - same behavior as #2 -- backup has a Cookies.dat of 0 size, a Files.dat of 0 size, an Entries.reg with only header info, and a Strings.dat where HM was looping -- it has 4 valid-looking strings and a large number of empty strings -- was at string 7175= when killed -- header says Strings=7176 ...

#5 -- keep list has 13 items -- remove list has 12 items -- backup has a Strings.dat containing 12 strings -- ended normally ...

#6 -- keep list has 13 items -- remove and unknown lists have 0 items -- nothing left to do -- end of HM tests

Tried a restore of the small backup (#5):

Result: -- BT said "done" -- called HM -- keep list has 13 items -- remove and unknown lists have 0 items -- Where did the restore go? ...

Called Firefox -- Firefox history shows 100s of items -- What was removed? -- stopped Firefox --

Called HM -- keep list has 13 items -- remove and unknown lists have 0 items -- What was supposed to happen?

Moved a few cookies from Unknown to Remove using the Blacklist and a few others to Keep using the Whitelist -- moved the rest in Unknown to Keep using the context menu --

All appeared to work OK -- backups looked good -- restores worked ...

The small problem: selected all the Keep items and used the context menu to move them to Unknown -- the items were removed from Keep but did not show in Unknown -- had to close Cookie Manager and restart it before the items showed in Unknown ...

A variation of the problem: selected all the Unknown items and used the context menu to move them to Remove -- the items disappeared from Unknown, and showed in Remove, but clicking on Unknown again ... the items were back in Unknown ... the items now showed in both Unknown and Remove -- closed Cookie Manager and restarted it -- now the items were in Unknown but not in Remove ...

Cookie Manager does remove Firefox cookies (per Winpatrol and Firefox)

Cookie Manager does not remove IE cookies (per Winpatrol and IE)

-- either using the Start button with the items in the Remove tab (tried three times)

-- or using the context menu Remove (tried once)

Note: each backup created when trying to remove IE cookies was empty (index.dat present, but Cookies.dat not present.

Note: after removing all Firefox cookies, a Strings.dat with Items=58 was restored -- calling Cookie Manager after the restore showed only 30 items total in the Keep/Remove/Unknown tabs. Firefox also showed about 30 items -- is there a problem here with the restore process?

Directory and File Tools keep failure to remove a secret ...

Used File Finder and Directory Finder to populate File Tool with IE History index.dat files and Directory Tool with History subdirectories -- for all the accounts in "Directories and Settings". Told each tool to remove all.

When doing this from an account with administrator permissions, the lines disappear from the lists as if all operations were successful. They were successful for targets that were not in use, but were not successful for targets in use (as expected). Shouldn't the tools issue a message for the unsuccessful operations?

When doing this from a guest account, all selected lines remained in the tool windows, which is sort of an indication that the operations failed (expected) -- but shouldn't the tools actually issue a message for the unsuccessful operations?

Note: correct-looking backups were created in every case, even in the failures.

In a more normal situation, Directory Tool failed to remove a hidden, read-only directory in the admin user's Local Settings\Temp directory even though the line disappeared from the tool's list (it did remove several non-hidden directories). Again no message. The hidden directory was removable with windows explorer. Did not bother with backup.

Trying the " custom uninstall" in the software manager, the installation folder couldn`t be found.

Installation path i.e. C:\program files\winrar

Main executable: uninstall.exe

Nothing happens, only the message: "Could not locate the program`s uninstaller"

Is this a general error of jv16 beta,that software, being installed in former days of the installation of jv16, can`t be uninstalled?

The "uninstall" of registry is okay.

Greetings software,

I assume that the jv16PT Software Manager list shows winrar as a software, and that winrar is still actually installed on your computer.

Software Manager merely displays the software items recorded in the registry by the software vendor. If such a software registry item contains incorrect information, such as pointing to C:\program files\winrar\uninstall.exe that does not exist, then the software must be uninstalled in some other way.

Such as manually by you, or by contacting the winrar vendor for assistance.

If winrar is actually no longer installed on your computer, then the registry software item is something left behind. You can choose to "Never show again" (a right click option for selected lines on the Software Manager list).

The Custom Uninstall feature is mainly for users who wish to examine the detailed software entries placed in the registry by the software item vendor, and to remove (with backup of course) erroneous entries, such as one that points to a non-existant uninstaller.

Another possibility is that C:\program files\winrar\uninstall.exe actually does exist. In this case, there is a bug somewhere, such as in the RC2 beta or in whatever uninstall.exe is doing. If that is your case, please report -- so development may request more information.

Software Manager uninstall -- only minor problems observed

On one machine:

ECSoftware was on the Software Manager list.

"Show more information" gave "Cannot find any more information."

"Custom uninstall" -- Search registry keys gave this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ECSoftware\{KEY} : {KEY}

and this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ECSoftware\{KEY} : {KEY} which had 19 keys under it.

"Uninstall" for the ECSoftware line did this:

-- offered to create a backup

-- removed the line from the list

-- removed the keys shown in

-- backup was present and restored the prior registry state for ECSoftware

No problem in the above except for one very small one: "Search registry keys ..." was greyed out until I hit f5 (did not happen every time ... maybe two small ones -- when there was no uninstall string, should have shown the "Remove" button, not the "Uninstall" one.

On another machine:

ECSoftware was on the Software Manager list.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ECSoftware\{KEY} : {KEY} -- "Run uninstaller" button was active -- selected the line -- "Run uninstaller" and "Remove" buttons were now available -- clicked "Run uninstaller" -- gave this: Could not locate the product's uninstaller! -- -- "Run uninstaller" and "Remove" buttons were still available -- selected the Software Manager window where "Custom uninstall" and "Uninstall" buttons were available

Software Manager window -- "Uninstall" for the ECSoftware line did this:

-- offered to create a backup -- removed the line from the list -- deleted the key shown in -- backup contained that key -- --

"Custom uninstall" window was still open -- clicked "Remove" -- offered to create a backup -- removed the line from the custom uninstall list (could not have removed the registry key -- already gone) -- created an empty backup (only header info in entries.reg) -- "Run uninstaller" button still active in "Custom uninstall" window -- Clicked "Run uninstaller" button -- gave this: Could not locate the product's uninstaller! -- clicked OK -- "Run uninstaller" button still active in "Custom uninstall" window

Conclusion: although some fine tuning of the buttons presented (*) might be a future objective (to reduce potential for confusion), there were no significant problems.

(*) For example, a key-only item cannot be uninstalled, only removed. --- Also, a removed item cannot run an uninstaller ...
