Told Disk Wiper tool to wipe only free space in directory "Wipe free space (very small)". OS=XP Pro.
Properties:
2 files, 1 folder
Size: 434 bytes (434 bytes)
Size on disk: 8.00 KB (8192 bytes)
Therefore size to be wiped < or = 7758 bytes
-- Ran for 2+ minutes, wrote 8+ MB (it said) -- hit Abort button, tool window went away.
-- Directory "Wipe free space (very small)" now contained a file "JV16.PT00F0607E.dat of size 1,195,176 KB -- big file could not be deleted (access is denied).
-- Directory could not be renamed (access is denied) -- jv16pt.exe process continued to use 2 to 7% of the CPU -- closed Main Window -- directory could be renamed, big file could be deleted.
Seems to be a few bugs in wipe only free space -- test idea derived from:

The "Wipe free space" function hangs the computer. After wiping all free space judging from the space counter of the tool, the time count freezes. I also tried doing the same in a diskette but after 10 minutes of wiping, I aborted the operation I aborted the operation, since it was clear that it was going nowhere. "Wipe all data" gives the same problems, but this only time I only tested it in a diskette, and I aborted the operation after 15 minutes. Fortunately, there are some good news. "Wipe all files and data structures" works well, maybe a bit slow, but there are no problems.
I also had no problems with "Wipe all files and data structures" in a non-root directory -- did not test "Wipe all data."
Could it be the tool is wiping free space on the whole disk even though a non-root directory was specified? If so, the option should not be selectable unless one or more root directories only are specified. After all, unused space in an NTFS file allocation is probaly not "free space" at all.
