File cleaner - not finding files

In file cliener there is an option to list all files in the system's temp directories.

It either doesn't work or the directories it considers to be temp directories aren't the ones I'm assuming they would be because even though there are files in those directories, file cleaner doesn't find anything! :?

It would help if the manual explained exactly what directories that option scans.

It scans the entire disk (look in the Options tab). It does not look in specific directories, but for what is specified in the Files to find tab.

Your problem might lie back in the Options tab -- if one or both of the Skip options are checked, it limits how deep the tool scans. The behavior is described in the manual. Check it out ... :

Neither of those make sense, I'm simply trying to set up an automatic task to clear the system temp folders of old files.

So I have full disk scanning turned off (all the drives are unchecked).

The option reads "List ALL files from the computer's temp directories". To me that means just that, all the files in the temp directories WILL be listed irregardless of any other settings!

And it doesn't work! No files at all are listed even though all three standard temp directories are full of files!

I think I got the result you want with these settings:

Under Options, check the drive containing the temp directories you want to look at. If you uncheck all the drives, the tool looks nowhere.

Under Files to find, uncheck Unneeded files. Otherwise, the tool will scan the whole drive.

Under More, check List all files from the computer's temp directories. You can use the aging parameters as you see fit.

Use Ignore words as you see fit.

The tool picks up the Temp directory of the current user. I don't think you can get the Temp directories of the other users in the Documents and Settings directory structure. Perhaps if you point the environment variables at those directories also ...

It might, my impression was that the drive check boxes controlled whether it scanned the whole drive or not and since that wasn't my intention I unchecked them.

I just checked the documentation. It does not state that some drive must be checked ... but that is the case. I can see how you got that impression.

It is also not very intuitive that checking Unneeded files is what triggers a full drive search.

Yeah, I'm discovering that too, checking the C: drive solved my problem.

I guess MaceCraft needs to do some major improving of the documentation!

Almost (heck with that, it does) makes me afraid to even consider the registry cleaning tools... I have to wonder what nasty surprises might await me there because the documentation isn't clear.

I also find it rather surprising and a bit disapointing that the documentation isn't in help file form which would be a lot more convient than PDF.

Hello "Tipperton",

Using PowerTools since years, I never had to complain about a "disaster" with Registry Cleaner.

This even using mostly The "Aggressive mode".

And as "redseujac" said, activating the Backup feature, you allways get a security.

The other thing not mentioned yet is PT 2005 is an intelligent utility, as it gives you the possibily to give an automatic feedback to Macecraft, when you have to restore by a backup. So the "naughty" behaviour can be fixed and every user can take benefit by usiing the "Cache Update" feature.

According to our user questionnaire (http://www.macecraft.com/news/106/) over 50% of the users consider PDF as the best file format, about 19% would prefer the help file format.

You are correct, this is indeed a bug. The listing of all temp files only works if at least one drive is selected. This bug will be fixed in the upcoming jv16 PowerTools 2006.
