Oops, you were answering at the same time I was adding to my reply -- see above for why win explorer type shows as media.
After "Open with" -- click on "Choose program" (at the bottom). You will get a scrollable list -- go down it until you find Notepad, or Wordpad, select the program you want to use and you are all set (1). Next time, the program you picked will be on the first "Open with" list.
(1) If you want to take .dat away from nero, check the box "Always use this program ... ." then you can just double click the file. I have no idea if this would impact nero, so you better ask around first ...
If you want to leave it to nero, make sure the box is

To delete your message, click the "X" next to edit (upper right corner). If the "x" is gone, well no big deal.
