Registry Cleaner -- serious bug ... or not? ... hope not

2006 beta3 RC shows a bunch of items (~150), many of which don't make sense to me. One example:

Key: HKUS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\

Entry's name: AutoMetadataCurrentDownloadCount

Value: C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Media Player.lnk

Error Description: File or directory "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Media Player.lnk" does not exist

A jump to regedit shows this value for the above key/entry name: REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

I then ran the 2005 RC (without ending the beta3 RC), got 7 items which looked all right.

A serious problem .. or am I missing something?

Could be a bug all right, I'll check it out later today and let you know.

I went through the list removing the obviously safe items. That left 44. 6 pertain to this topic: http://www.macecraft.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=807

The rest, covering 4 user profiles, have the same key as shown in the original post (except for profile, S-1-5-18 in the example), and 8 to 10 different entry names. In other words, they pertain to media player preferences.

Media player works fine, but then again, I haven't told RC to remove the suspect entries. :

You are correct, this is a bug and a very serious one. I have posted a warning about this matter to the forum and to beta testers via a newsletter.

Although the problem is very serious, it only took one minor addition to the source code to fix it. So, this problem is fixed in the next released version, thank you very much for reporting, good job!
