This thread is dedicated in solving the cache update problem (i.e. the jv16 PT 2005 will close or crash when the product updates its internal cache).

The problem is not very common and only affects a small number of computers.

So, if the product crashes on your computer, check out this test version and let me know if the problem is still there.

I bought jv16PT 2005 today (personal edition, version 1.5.0.277), and installed it over jv16PT 1.4.1 on 2 of my computers both with Windows XP SP2. The new version crashed the first time I updated the cache on the one computer (Dell Workstation 670), but worked fine on the other (Dell Optiplex GX150).

I tried removing and reinstalling JV16PT 2005, but with no luck. I then tried installing the test version at http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/jv16pt_test_setup.exe . Unfortunately, the test version also crashed. I note that the test version has the same version number 1.5.0.277.

If it is of interest to you in fixing the problem, I can let you have the main differences in software and hardware between the two computers.

Just to add a working on.

I Have a Firewire external HDD, and it has no problems.

PowerTools and RegSupreme Pro users should check to see that they are a "Local Administrator" and not a "User" (or "Limited Account" like on XP Home) on the User Account that the program is crashing when the cache updates itself.

I have had the same problem as well and it was documented in this forum somwhere. However I learned to live with it and simply selected the "No" option and all was fine. However that issue has been going on for quite some time now and although I did not install the "test" version I have managed to do something about it. First of all, I have two computers. One running XP Home (the problem one) and one running XP Pro. Just today I installed Jv16 2005 and it installed without a problem. It asked me to update the cache and I selected "Yes" and lo and behold it went through the motions and did it's thing. Then I copied the filecache.dat to my XP Home machine, ran Jv16 2005 and it did not ask to have my cache updated! I don't know if this is a solution to the problem at all or not, but it works somehow!

Can you make test version (like the one in the link above) that includes the PDF file Handbook? This would be a great feature in all future Beta testing of jv16 PowerTools 2005. It would help us at least feel we had the full features of the product when testing it.

I don't think that would be a good idea.. It is an test version afterall. It would be bandwith waste in my opnion.

I'm using my computer to test new software so it only makes sense I am using the most up-to-date and full featured version of whatever it is I am Beta testing. I tend to lose interest when the Beta testing software does not have the same features I would use if I had the regular version. Why should I then test a product that is not the same in features as the regular version?

In my opinion the handbook isn't a feature but a support for the product.

And i don't think that the handbook wil be changed that much compaired to the programs them self.

The products are exactly the same except some bugs fixed or small GUI changes etc...

So if you download the handbook once, it will be good for a while, and you don't need to download a huge file with the handbook in it everytime.

I don't care, let me download the test version with the Handbook and I'll leave it installed until the next test or real jv16 PowerTools 2005 version comes out. If I the Handbook is not included I feel as if I am missing out on something and then I'll go back to the regular version from the Macecraft web site. I'm not asking too much here am I?

Another reason that I am not sure what to do here is both the regular and test versions are crashing on me. I recently installed the test version and it closed by itself after installing the license and then opening it after a reboot. Everytime I install jv16 PowerTools 2005 I have to open it in order to create the Settings folder. Then when I do it says, "Your trial peroid has expired, contact http://www.macecraft.com for a License." This message pops up two times in a row and then I click "OK" each time. I wonder if I formatted my PC and then installed it (then this would go away) if the program would stop crashing? What I am saying is this happening to Beta testers who had jv16 PowerTools 2005 installed during the testing phase? And now the script that causes me to see the Trial Period warning after opening the program to create the Settings folder is the main cause of the crashing the program?

No this does not happen to every beta testers , at least not to me ; in your case , what I would do is the following : first of all save your license file in a safe palce on your hard disk , somewhere where to find it any time , preferebaly on another partition than the one containing Windows ; then uninstall completely Jv16 Power Tools ; by complete uninstall I mean complete ; this ameans also any folder containing or refferring to Jv 16 Powertools ; if the uninstall inside the program does not work , you will have to do it manually using REGEDIT ; serazch for any key containing JV16 Powertools and delete all of these keys ; after complete uninstall reboot ; is the reboot OK? have you sacnned for viral infection ?

Then reinstall in a proper way ; insert your license key where indicated ; everything should work ; if not only Juoni Vuorio can help you. best regards OLIVIER GEBUHRER

I just installed Jv 16 Powertools (licensed version) and immediately ran into this cache problem:

The original version closed the program when I chose to update the file cache.

The "test" version hangs when I choose to update the file cache.

FYI, I do have some USB and Firewire drives on my computer, but I disconnected them and it did not help.

As a new user, it is disconcerting to install software that immediately has problems. I know I can use the program by selecting not to update the cache, but that seems to disable an important part of the process.

This problem is fixed in the next updated version which is released tomorrow.
