Afraid to use Registry Cleaner

Hello,

I never used a registry cleaner but discovered that jv16 PowerTools 2005 contains one. I tried the Registry Scan and found 1930 wrong entries. Now I'm afraid that after cleaning the registry the PC will work for a time, but a seldom used program will miss a registry entry. Restoring the registry before cleaning would make that program work again but disturb programs installed meanwhile.

I've discussed that in a newsgroup an been advised not to use a registry cleaner. Can you tell me jv16 PowerTools 2005 Registry Cleaner experiences?

I've happily used different versions of JV16 for a number of years. I trust the current version.

I suggest you make a backup of your system, then give the registry cleaner a try. Don't use the aggressive mode until you gain some experience.

Thanks for your reply. If not using the aggressive mode: Which entries should I delete and which not?

If not using the aggressive mode, I would feel safe deleting all found entries. Others may disagree with me.

The aggressive mode is what it says 'aggressive', this can mean that some entries shouldn't be deleted.

So i won't recomend to use the aggressive mode if you just want to clean the registry and don't have much knowledgs of computers.

Hi, Anselm. Like you, I had never used a registry cleaner and was VERY nervous about using one. Finally, having heard the jv16 Registry Cleaner praised to the skies, I decided at least to let it tell me what condition my registry was in. Well, it was in dreadful shape: on a scale of 1 to 100 (with 100 being best), my registry scored a 1 : . Even then, it took me weeks to get up the courage to run the Registry Cleaner again and let it deal with the hundreds of errors it found. But once I did that and the sky didn't fall, I decided to keep using it. Each time, I've had it create a backup first, but I've never needed to use the backup (knock on wood :) ). I feel a lot more confident knowing that my registry is in good shape (it now often scores 100).

The bottom line: don't be afraid. As others have said, it's probably wise to use the "normal" rather than the "aggressive" setting and let the Registry Cleaner fix whatever it can and delete what it can't fix.

I think we all know how critical the registry is. Without it, our MS O/S is dead in the water. Just creating a software like this is a huge risk because of the critical nature of the registry.

It's really sort of scary to use something like this because there is always going to be a fear that something will happen and the computer will crash.

I have been using jv16 powertools now for the last 2 - 3 years and I have never had a computer or software related crash. And it helps to speed up your computer...there is a noticeable difference in performance everytime I use it...

I certainly understand your concern, but my experience tells me that this software is really good! I highly recommend using it. You will see a performance difference for sure.

PS - You will want to compact your registry hives after running this tool, to cut down on the "holes" left behind in the registry. What I mean is, it leaves "empty spaces" in the registry, as does every registry cleaner which does not have a "compact" feature or "hive cleaner." You can get NTREGOPT from Sysinternals that will do this safely. NTREGOPT is a perfect companion tool which should be run after using the registry cleaner. You will clean up the empty spaces and improve the performance and efficiency of your computer even more.

By the way, the jv16 PowerTools 2006 also contains the registry compact feature, and the entire product is a free update for all customers who have bought (or who will buy) PT 2005.

I'm a little late getting into this topic, so my apologies.

Is the reg cleaner in the 2005 version more agressive than in earlier versions in what it displays as "problems", even in default mode (I won't touch aggressive mode)?

Earlier versions were so safe and conservative, especially if you elected to show only "safe" entries (I think that was the default anyway), that I got lulled into not doing backups. But I found the hard way that backups are definitely necessary with 2005.
