How does the File Finder work?

I use the very last version of jv16 Powertools 2005 in Windows XP SP2, and I just can't get the File Finder to work properly:

in the "Files to find"-section, I filled in "*.jpg" (because I wanted the program to list my jpg-files, ok?)

then, in the "search in"-section, I clicked on "add" and double-clicked on the directory map I wanted to be search (and about which I am sure it is containing jpg-files)

then I clicked on "Start" to start the searching procedure, and when I got the search results, I got no list at all!

I really don't understand what I do wrong. Can you help?

From what directory you are trying to search for the pictures?

What settings you have enabled under the Options tab?

Are you sure you are referring to the File Finder and not File Cleaner?

Well...

I unchecked all the options, so as to be sure nothing could prevent the File Finder to do its job (then it doesn't skip anything), and I tried different things:

first: I asked the File Finder to look for "*.jpg" in the map "Documents of Mathieu/My pictures/Photos (own)/Son" (remember I've got a XP-directory structure). This map contains hundreds of jpg-files, but the File Finder wasn't able to find anything.

second: I asked the File Finder to look for "*.jpg" in the map "Documents of Mathieu", and this time, the File Finder found hundreds of jpg-files, and its found also the jpg-files in the submap "Documents of Mathieu/My pictures/Photos (own)/Son" that it wasn't able to find when I asked the program to search straight in this map !!!!

I think this is a bug. Do you need more details?

Just to be sure, could you tell me what does it exactly say in the "Search in" box?

Does it say:

"Documents of Mathieu/My pictures/Photos (own)/Son"

or something like:

"C:\Documents and settings\Documents of Mathieu\My pictures\Photos (own)\Son"

What the "Search in"-box exactly says is this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Mathieu\Mijn documenten\Mijn afbeeldingen\Foto's (eigen digitale foto's)\Bruno

(in the previous messages, I translated the map names into English so as to make it easier to read for you, but the real map names on my PC are partly in Dutch and contains '-signs. Could the '-signs cause the program to malfunction?)

Does the File Finder work with other directories and file types (other than "*.jpg")?

Yes, as far as I can see, it works in other directories and with other file types:

for example: I just tried to let the File Finder search for *.html in another directory, and it worked well.

The fixed version is now online, just download the latest version and install it over the old version.

The version number was not increased, there is a good reason behind it which I can't, however tell.

It seems to be working much better now! Thank you!

But...

if the "skip system directories to improve safety"-option is UNchecked, it doesn't work! (then the File Finder gives no results, with the same file types and directory names I already told you above).

if the "skip deep directory structure to improve speed" is checked, the File Finder still search the deep structures! (I thought the File Finder would then only search the directory I selected and not the subdirectories).

Hello,

"Skip deep directory structure ..." means that the tool isn't looking deeper then 4 levels of the structure. starting from the root path and not from the directory you selected.

More detailed explanations you will find in the handbook p. 38.

May be your other problem - Skip system directories ... unchecked - is in relationship with this misunderstanding, because your folder C:\ .... /Mijn aafbeldingen/ ... is allready at level 5.

I will not tape the complete path....because then jv16 is of no use.

With Windows XP 2 engine problems!

I have read the Help Pdf file.It does not help!

If I type something like "widget*.exe" I will get an answer.

My licence is N°28917 Dupont.

Please help me to discover my mistakes.
