Clean and Fix issues

I am running XP SP3. I did a registry clean last week with JV16 2008 a few days ago. Today I installed and ran JV16 2010, and got very low numbers for registry and PC health. I ran Clean and Fix My Computer with the safest system policy setting. After this was completed I received a Windows error message that files Windows needs had been replaced and I needed to insert my SP3 disc. I restored the registry and deleted files, and am now keeping my fingers crossed. What happened? Is this a bug?

bcayton, you are scaring me. I just this morning installed jv16 2010 and have attempted to run clean and fix, but it never finishes. Maybe I am better off that it didn't? I am also using XP SP3 so the fact that clean and fix might remove needed MS files does scare me. While I am not the most experienced and professional computer geek, I have been fooling with them since 1968 and have learned that things never work just as expected. I will now sit back and not run clean and fix until we get an answer and a fix. Good Luck.

I am running XP-Pro-SP3 for many years with all versions of jv16PT, including the latest 2010 version 2.0.0.963.

Fortunately I never had a problem 'what so ever' with Clean and Fix My Computer (=CFMC) in Safe or Normal mode.

Can you be a little more specific? Did you install jv16PT 2010 version 2.0.0.963? (see jv16 main window -> help -> about jv16 Power Tools)

Which required Windows files were removed by Fix/Delete in CFMC, after your scan in Safe mode?

If your system is stable again, after you restored the registry/file backup you took, you could do the following to help potential debugging:

Run CFMC scan in Safe mode, DO NOT Fix/Delete, but in the Scan result window click file -> save list as..

This creates a list of all found registry entries and files during the CFMC scan in Safe mode.

Than Zip this saved .txt file and attach it to this forum thread for the developer to check it out.

Per your suggestion I re-ran the scan and saved the result, which is attached. It looks like some DLL's are on the delete list.

I am running the latest version of the software.

The error message was:

Windows File Protection

Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP SP3 CD-ROM now.

The error message did not specify which files were replaced. This error message is evidently triggered by the Windows File Protection feature. As this computer is work-essential, I did not waste any time before restoring the system.

This explanation, plus the zipped text file you posted earlier, should help jv16 find the cause.

One wonders, for example, about the 23 C:\Windows\System32 dll files in the list. Even if they are not the cause, they are not "Unneeded temp files" as the list says. That is a bit confusing.

In any case, the challenge is figuring which, if any, of the items in the list are in Microsoft's Windows File Protection checklist.

Those items are unused Shared DLL files that are picked up by the File Cleaner module of Clean and Fix my computer. It's correct that they are not "unneeded temp files", I'll see if I can find a better description for these items.

I still cannot say for sure what caused the problem. My best guess is that the data inside the registry was not correct and the removed Shared DLL files were not unused. In which case there is no bug in PowerTools, it must trust the data it gets from the registry on whether a Shared DLL is used or unused.

However, it is a major issue that this could have happened in the first place, given the fact that the user had used the safest scan mode.

Therefore I have now made a safety improvement: Running the Clean and Fix my computer or File Cleaner with the safest scan option will no longer list any files relating to Windows, nor any DLL or other executable files.

This improvement will be included to the next released version.

I just did a clean and fix also and thinking 2010 would act like 2009 reg clean I clicked fix and using backup as usual

jv16 backed up the backup dir full of about 25 gig of movies I had in a temp folder on G drive.leaving no room on my c drive

jv16 crashed when I tried to restore backup file.so I had to restore my whole C drive to get out of trouble .

Then uninstall 2010 and back to trusted 2009. so don't try to fix temp folders with a lot of data using clean and fix.

This issue has troubled me for a while, so I wanted to find a way to make sure this won't happen to anyone else in the future.

I have now made a safety improvement to the File Cleaner (and Clean and Fix My Computer) that attempts to detect cases like this where user is storing non-temp files under a temp folder. This generic safety check is available only when running the tool in the Default or Safe mode, this safety check is disabled in the Aggressive mode.

I have also added another layer of safety: the program will now show an additional confirmation message if user is attempting to remove more than 1 GB of data with the File Cleaner or any other file tool.

The confirmation message is:

You have selected to remove a lot of items! This seems like a very dangerous thing to do. Are you absolutely sure you know what you are doing and want to proceed?

I know this is not the best possible confirmation message, but it's the best one available in English.lng at the moment. I have added the following new item under of the English.lng:

88 = You are attempting to remove more than {1} of data. This is a major operation that will take a while to complete, and could be a dangerous thing to do. Are you sure you know what you are doing and whish to continue? //The {1} is replaced with an amount of data, such as "1.2 GB" or "10 MB"

But this new string will only be used with PowerTools 2011, I am not asking any translators to update their translations for this.
