Additional testing today confirmed some more fixes for 2.0.0.796.

Confirmed that these did not work:

18. "Clean and fix my computer": List control->"Remove from list" for items under the "MRU and History" group may occasionally cause AV or hang program. 779 x64 w7 (.) FDNW

It seems removing all or just one of the "MRU and History" group items does not cause a crash. If you remove something in that group from the list, then go on to remove something else in that group, you usually get the AV failure after the next removal or two.

If you do nothing in the wihdow but close it, it does not fail, even when run many times (when testing ignore words, for example).

I haven't experienced the "freeze at Initial Setup" issue on my x64 Windows 7 system. Later today, I'll see what happens on a notebook with x86 XP Pro SP3.

In my tests I have found Windows XP to be the best environment to see the problem, but the problem is not limited to any specific Windows.

First I tried it on an x86 Windows 7 notebook, and it "froze."

Observations (from memory, but essentially what happened):

1. The install went fine.

2. When the initial setup started, it very soon showed almost no cpu use.

3. After a few moments, the crash logger put up its "seems to be frozen" pop-up.

4. I continued the application, and windows said "not responding." I think I said wait; the only other option presented was close it.

5. While I got coffee, the crash logger did its "seems to be frozen" pop-up again. I think I told it to close the application.

6. Windows said "not responding." I took the close option. Windows "looked for a solution" for perhaps a minute, then abruptly took down the protected setup window.

7. During all this, the application showed little or no cpu use.

8. I guess the initial setup was waiting for something that was not going to happen.

Note: this was my second try. It did the same thing the first time, but I did not have "DebugMode.dat" in the folder.

I then put "C:\Program Files\Macecraft\V\*" in the Avast! (5.0.507) exclude list and told Avast! to stop its "shields" for an hour. Then I started over.

Note: my x64 Windows 7 desktop, which has no initial setup issues, has Avast! 4.8.

Observations:

1. The install went fine.

2. The initial setup very soon got an access violation. I told the crash logger to let it continue.

3. The application used ~50% cpu for ~2 minutes, ~10% cpu for ~ 8 more minutes, then the cpu use pattern changed for ~2 more minutes. At this point, the progress indicator had filled all the way. Then cpu use was less than 1% while I wrote this.

4. After about 15 more minutes with no change, I tried to close the application from the task bar. The crash logger reported an "invalid pointer operation."

5. I chose "close application" and the protected setup window went away. That's all folks.

BTW, and just FYI, as an experiment, I copied a self-contained folder that had a good initial setup on my x64 Windows 7 desktop PC.

Using the copy on both the x86 XP Pro and x86 Windows 7 HP notebooks, History Cleaner gave the same result as PT2009.

Registry Cleaner ran to completion but gave skimpy results, compared to PT2009, likely because ...\Cache\SysAnalysis.dat was from the wrong system.

Deleting ...\Cache\SysAnalysis.dat and then starting PT2010 (786), forced the initial setup which froze within 30 seconds.

I post no logs for this because:

Edit: A few more times, I repeated the tests here < http://www.macecraft.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=23211#p23211 > They all got the crash logger freeze warning. Avast! apparently is not involved. It seems the deadlock usually happens, but the one time that it apparently didn't, the program was able to log a minute's worth of work before it hung again. "Freeze logs (1).zip" posted earlier suggests that possibility.

Edit: I later forced the "initial setup" to recur on the x64 Window system. It finished OK in about 4 minutes. Cpu use was about 30% spread pretty evenly across the four processors.

Was the file creation issue the problem that you fixed? Windows said another process had the tool's file (I forget the filename). It happened again when I ran the tool a day or two later.

Edit: It was the crash logger that said it: "exception message : Cannot create file "C:\PT_UnitTestFile.dat". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

I was disappointed to see beta-5 released at FileForum, after failing to get any of the previous builds to work.

Having bookmarked this forum, I have checked back daily, only to find.... not much!

I re-purchased jv16 at beta 4, but have not been able to use it since beta 5...

Please, uninstall jv16 - then install from scratch, you will then see the problems I've been

having with the 'initial scan' - that never ends.....
