W7 RC 7100 x64 & jv16 V580

Hi,

I have installed W7 RC x64 and x32 a few times for various reasons, this morning I installed it again with a view

of staying with it untill Oct 22nd this year when the final is released.

I decided to try jv16 to see how it works after all the work put in to it.

I ran it just now after finishing my installs and I got this,

Is "3282359 registry errors were fixed" correct ", doesnt look like it to me, that is 3 million plus errors, or have I got ot wrong.

Now I'm wondering if jv16 is OK to use in x64 RC.

I also am running RC x64 and have concerns with the new version of JV16 09.

I had done a registry compact after backing up the registry first and was unable to boot into windows after that. (blue screen of death)

Submitted a ticket to tech and asked how I could restore my registry without being able to get into Windows.

Have't had a response back in 4 days yet. Restored Trueimage file from a month ago and had to reinstall some programs as I couldn't wait this long without my laptop.

I haven't had a successful registry compacting on a x64 machine ever. Used previous versions also.

Now I have a problem with cleaning the registry where it does not do anyting or show anything on the screen as to what or if anything was done.

Used JV16 2008 and I have no problems.

What gives? Does the 2009 version have bugs in the program pertaining to x64 machines?

jv16 PT 2009 has not been thoroughly tested for Windows 7 x64. During all the beta testing, I do not recall seeing anyone using Win 7 x86 or x64 with the beta versions of PT 2009. PT 2008 may run on Win 7; however, it is definitely not fully compatible with XP x64, Vista x64, or Win 7 64-bit systems. It only addresses the 32-bit areas of the system registry. Full compatibility with XP and Vista x64 systems did not come into being until PT 2009 V580.

Whereas Win 7 is not yet an official final Window OS release, I would assume that Jouni will have time to adjust PT 2009 for Windows 7 by October 22, 2009 when Win 7 is to be officially released.

Same thing happened to me on RC x64, and couldn't be repaired even with System Restore.

And I noted that the compaction ratio was quite large at 66 percent, which I had never seen before.

At any rate, I am back to Vista x64, and have no problem with either registry cleaning or compaction with it.

It is not clear to me that anyone filed, through Macecraft's Bug Tracking System, a report relative to the possible Registry Compactor issue with Windows 7 x64 RC1.

Since this could be a critical issue after October 22, I filed the one shown below.

Does the issue belong to PowerTools or Windows 7? Time and more experience will tell ...

Perhaps for Windows 7 x64 only: Registry Compactor makes the registry unusable.

Although I don't have an x64 computer, at least two users (cossak2007 and JimF) have said in the forum that they had to reinstall Windows after running the PowerTools Registry Compactor.

They didn't say if they tried it more than once.

Actually you can, if you reinstall W7 x64 again first. No problem ... not everyone has the time for such experimentation.

It hit me at the wrong time. I tried Win7 because another registry cleaner (not JV16) caused Vista x64 to blue screen to begin with. A couple of days later, after I had all my programs reinstalled, I thought I was home free. And since the compactor never adds or subtracts anything, it is perfectly safe, right?

I have been blue-screened to my limit for awhile.

Reading the above posts I thought I'd try compacting the registry in my W7 X64 just to see what would happen.

I made an image of the 3 partitions I use,

I compacted it and restarted the PC and got a BSOD. There was no particular error named in the BSOD.

I restored the partitions and I'm up and running again.

My 3 partitions are

C W7

D AVs

F Utility programs.

Anyway, this would seem to prove that this affects all computers, not 1 or possibly 2.

Perhaps all W7 x-64.

I've run the Registry Compactor twice with W7 x-32 with no significant problems.

Per RegEdit, here's what the registry shows for the hivelist key.

Registry Compactor shows the same "Data" as 10 files where \Device\HarddiskVolume1\ corresponds to C:\. I wonder if is similar for W7 x-64?

I'm sorry I did not explain properly, I meant it would only affect W7 x64.
