V1.9.0.552 Registry Compactor failure to open HKLM\Security

This is referencing an XP-SP3 32bit system with PT 1.9.0.552

When performing a registry compact, PT issues an error "Failure to open registry key HKLM\Security" and does not compact this hive.

As reported earlier, this occurs on Vista x64 as well...different computer entirely.

The above problem is a Permissions issue with the HKLM\Security key. For some reason, the Administrators group does not have permission to Read this key. The fix below works on both my Vista x64 system and XP-SP3 x86 computers.

Here is a FIX for this problem:

1. Open Regedit

2. Navigate to HKLM\Security and right click on Security

3. Select "Permissions" from the drop down menu

4. Select the Administrators group

5. Checkmark "Read"

6. Click on Apply and OK

Well, well with Vista Ultimate 32-bit the Security hive never got compacted with jv16 PowerTools 2009 (all builds) at my computer.

i get the same error "Failure to open registry key HKLM\Security" this was not the case with version 550

I am not certain and did not say that the hive gets compacted

ok after giving administrator read permission for security the error is gone

no compression security hive

now there are only 2 hives to compress security and software

in the past this was 5 or 6 did microsoft something with latest windows update ?

What's the frequency of your Registry Compacting? The hives cannot be compacted every day. That makes no sense. Then there's simply nothing to compact.

When you open Registry Compactor, the hive list should look like this for Vista.

I also get that in Vista Business x32.

I changed the settings as above and I selecte only this hive to compact and I get this popup =

It wasnt possible to compact the selected registry root hives.

Most Likely they are already compacted.

that could indeed be the case as I compacted the registry yesterday.

5 minutes later I caried out a full compact and did not get the popup.

It's a very small hive and there isn't much to compact.

I noticed - also with other compactors - even after running a compactor the size of that hive generally remains the same.
