Registry Cleaner run time increases by 40% when..........

Good Day Jouni,

I have noticed that after I load my registry bookmarks, Registry Cleaner's run time increases by about 40% (from 38 sec it increases to 53 sec)

Btw, I am using the bookmarks from Registrar Registry Manager 6.02

Why can't the Registry Cleaner just ignore the bookmarks?

So it's run time doesn't increase....

How does these bookmarks work, do they add something to the registry? I would think it to be very strange if such feature would add anything to the registry, and thus the increased run time would be just coincidence.

Yes, they are added to the registry as Bookmarks/Comments/Descriptions for some keys.

For example for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\\CursorSize:

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1957994488-562591055-682003330-500\Software\Resplendence Sp\RegBookmarks (HKCU\Console\\CursorSize=address=HKCU\Console\\CursorSizecategory=Windows Deployment Kit\Consoledescription=Specifies the percentage of a character cell that the cursor occupies. This setting affects the default window.color=1links=http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/deployguide/en-us/34520.asp)

So all the bookmarks are stored in:

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1957994488-562591055-682003330-500\Software\Resplendence Sp\RegBookmarks

The increased run time is Not just coincidence....

At 1st, when I noticed the Greatly increased run time about 3-4 months ago, I also thought it may be just coincidence.....

But I have been investigating this for the last 4 weeks, and I am convinced that it is Not just coincidence....

So it is due to how the Registry Cleaner is processing the bookmarks stored in the registry (in HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1957994488-562591055-682003330-500\Software\Resplendence Sp\RegBookmarks)....

Any way of minimising this large increase in run time?

Addendum:

If I dont load/install the bookmarks, then there is no change in Registry Cleaner's run times.....

..But if I load them, the run times increase Markedly (by > 40%)....

I think your result shows that the scan engine continues to look at everything below the key even with an ignore hit on that key. That is rather pointless. A proper change to the scan engine logic could possibly yield a significant performance gain. It could even go beyond your "Resplendence" case.

Is that possible jouni?

Well that's just stupid to store such data to the registry. But sure, I'll find a way to solve the issue.

I used to use Registrar Registry Manager 6.02 but switched to Registry Workshop because of problems just like this. Registry Workshop stores the bookmarks in a file, which is how it should be done. Easier to backup that way and doesn't add a lot of useless stuff to the registry.

I use Registrar Registry Manager 6.02, Registry Crawler 4.5, & Registry Workshop 4.1.0.....

..But Registrar enables me to accomplish many tasks that Registry Workshop just can't do.....

I stand corrected then. My apologies. I guess I never really played with it that much after going to Registry Workshop. I do like the bookmarks in RW though. Maybe I'll have to learn some things about Registry Manager from you since you know it fairly well, it seems.

I also use Registry Crawler as it is faster than most registry search programs that I have tried, although it is in dire need of an update. It seems they have abandoned it.

Unfortunately, Private test build 569 does Not fix this problem....

Timings:

Jv16 1.9.0.552 Registry Cleaner run time = 54 sec

Jv16 1.9.0.569 Registry Cleaner run time = 54 sec

I'm wondering what's wrong in itself with a Registry Scan time of 54 sec.

That seems rather normal.

On my system the Registry Scan takes ca 80 sec.
