File Cleaner Scan Results

In a previous topic, I reported some computer problems after I carelessly delete all files that were found using "File Cleaner" run in Safe Mode. We both were perplexed about whether the file cleaner could have caused all the problems that I reported. After fixing the Windows XP issues, I decided to run another scan just to see what files were identified in "Safe Mode". Here are the first 10% of entries that were identified FYI. C:\ is my root drive. I'm a bit surprised to see some of these files on the list. I don't know whether there is something unique about my Windows Installation that causes File Cleaner to flag critical files or whether this is representative of most scan results ?

File Cleaner-->Temp files tab-->Unneeded files-->Quick select-->Safe mode should not have picked up the sort of files you listed.

The files to find box should contain only *.tmp; *.temp; *.gid; *.chk; *.~*; for Safe mode.

Do any of these tabs contain checked boxes? Unused files, Temp dirs, Other If so, uncheck them, run again, and see if you get a more reasonable list.

Several of the other tabs did contain checked boxes -- although I am almost sure I did not check them myself. Specifically, the "Empty Files" box was checked, as was the "List files from the temp directories", and the "Unused shared DLL/OCX files" box as well. Are these the default settings when you first open jv16 ?

Anyway, I unchecked the boxes and reran the file cleaner. None of the critical Windows files were picked up this time. In fact, here are the only ones found this time. Seems like a more reasonable list. Just a thought, whether I checked the above boxes inadvertently or they were checked as the program default, it seems a bit scary that Windows boot files and other critical system files would be identified as candidates for removal. Thanks as always for you quick and helpful response.
