Deleted pitures by mistake!!

Hi all,

While waiting for my order number to upgrade I downloaded PT 2008 . Unfortunately, using the software manager I deleted an unwanted file but mistakingly started to delete the directory also which was 'My Pictures' :(

I now find that I have deleted some very important .jpg; .avi & .thm files. I attempted to use the recovery feature which recovered some but some had been erased and others were between 0 & 100% intact. I have a lot of pictures that will now not preview, or open. Everything in PT 2008 is default and I do not have file wipe switched on for backups but I have a feeling that it wipes when deleting unwanted software as it bypassed the recycle bin. Is there anything I can do; I have tried some free undelete software but to no avail. I know I should have chosen to backup but I made a mistake and now I have cherished pictures/videos missing.

If it's that bad then your only option is to run recovery off a CD/DVD

Installing another app' could overwrite some of the data you are trying to recover.

If you are comfortable with this then there are many Linux based ISO's (free) that you could download.

You must use another PC to download it (downloading could overwrite data)

Just to be clear: what exactly did you do? When using the Software Manager, did it or did it not ask you for permission before it started to delete the directories and/or files?

jv16, yes the program did ask me and it is my fault as I overlooked the name of directory that PT offered to delete. By the time I had stopped the 'wiping' I had lost quite a few pictures and small videos. I have recovered some but a lot are incomplete and will not open.

There is no blame with the program, it even asked me to backup; all user error which I have never done before :

Everything else is backed up and this was the only file needing backup which I was about to do next week having just bought a second laptop. I am currently living in Bulgaria and it is difficult to get backup devices for this size of file, approx 10Gb.

Anyway, it looks like PT did quite a good 'wiping' job which is beyond the capabilities of most recovery software.

FWIW, came across this a little while ago; http://www.recuva.com/

It's a new utility from Piriform, same people who make CCleaner.

Haven't used it, so can't speak it's effectiveness.
