JV16 PT 2005 1.5.0.278 File Cleaner aggr not finding *.bak

(I looked for a report of this behavior in this forum and in Tech Support -- do not believe it's been reported.)

Using JV16 PowerTools 1.5.0.278 (great product) on Windows XP SP2:

- File Finder finds *.bak just fine

- File Cleaner "Aggressive" mode lists *.bak but does not find it

Both operations are set to search the same 2 hard drives. The files in question are months old and reside in normal user directories.

This makes me wonder if other search strings in the "Aggressive list" are not being matched.

Do you have the "But only files that have not been accessed in the last..." option checked? If you have, uncheck it.

Also make sure you don't have "Skip deep directory structures to improve speed" checked, if you do, uncheck it and try again.

Yes, I unchecked anything that could impede the search ("But only...", "Skip...") and verified that all hard drives were selected.

Anyone should be able to reproduce this by putting a (non-empty) .bak file anywhere (e.g., desktop) and trying to find it with File Cleaner (not File Finder) in aggressive mode.

If others cannot reproduce the failure to find .bak files, then I'll have to do more digging at my end.

You are correct, I can too reproduce the problem. It will be fixed in the next updated version which will be released later today.

I have now found and fixed the problem.

It is said that one wrong bit can crash a million dollar computer system. This time it was 8 bits, one byte that caused this problem.

I'd just like to confirm that I was able to File Clean (as it were) *.bak files in Version 1.5.1.300.

The test bak file I had left on my Desktop, plus the sensitive MS Office file OPA11.BAK, did only show up in the scan if I unchecked "But only ... last n Days" -- but I took that to be an artifact of some form of background desktop updating (and Office updating) by Microsoft's software.

Just to be sure, I'll leave behind another .bak file, created by 3rd party software, in a regular work directory, so that next weekend's File Cleaner scan should pick it up.

One thing I will note -- no Microsoft Office user (at least on XP) ever wants to delete OPA11.BAK. You will be sorry if you do -- an annoying loop of software updates ensues. Maybe this should be a file that is omitted from the *.bak File Cleaner list by default... Just a thought.
