File Finder

I have Windows Vista Home Premium and i,ve just opened up JVPower Tools 2007 and in particular "File Finder". I,m having trouble entering the file type to search. First, i don,t have open and close quotation marks on my keyboard. Is it ok to < and >. Secondly, in "Search In" after using C: for the directory to search, my keyboard wont let me attach the backslash, instead it puts a tiny backslash with a letter (a) underneath it. For example can i search for files <*.txt: ?. Appreciate reply.

What kind of keyboard you are using?

It is the Dell keyboard that came with my purchase of the computer in Feb/07. Pls note that i have not had the same or similar behavior at any other time or at any other site. At the present time the keyboard is operating normally.

Seems most strange, could you try to uninstall and reinstall the PowerTools?

Also, are you using the trial version of PowerTools, or the paid version?

I am using the paid version. Are the quotation marks " " the same as the ones you use in the Handbook because my keyboard dosen,t have open and close quotation marks.

Yes, quotation marks are the standard " " ones. Does this help?

The quotes don't go in the File Finder's Files to find input box.

The quotation marks are in the Handbook examples only for punctuation.

Here's an actual input string from one of my File Finder preferences:

0*.dat; *0*.dat;*0.dat; 1*.dat; *1*.dat;*1.dat;

Thank you for your reply. I ran the string and got a list of files. I then tried "0*.txt;" (without quotations) and it showed no files although i lots of txt files on C:\.

Use *.txt

0*.txt only finds those with names starting with a zero.

Thanks, I,m comfortable now using File Finder. However, Directory Finder still a bit of a puzzle. For example i have a directory "C:\DELL" (without quotations) and when i look for it in C:\ it turns up blank. What am i doing wrong?.

* or *.* in the Directories to find tab should find all the subdirectories where you tell it to search.

* finds every directory name.

*.* does the same thing.

*a finds every directory with an "a" in the last position of the name.

b* finds every directory with a "b" in the first position of the name.

*z* finds every directory with a "z" anywhere in the name.

As per above, i tried all the examples listed searching in C:\ and i got some directories named C:\ProgramData\Microsoft or nothing. Does "finds every directory name" mean that it finds all directories of a particular name or does it mean that it finds every directory in C:\ or on the system. Tks.

What Directory Finder finds is determined by the settings in all the tabs.
