Also the bug of the History Cleaner's not-so-smoothly working progress bar is now fixed.

In the regards of the Backup Tool, doesn't do Restores in v.1.7.0.404 (*) bug: the bug only affects the right-click menu, so you can still do restores normally with the Restore button. So, not so serious problem, I think :)

Old bug - still while running registry cleaner via automation tool manually from the desktop, the windows opens and shuts immediately.

New bug - after running the registry cleaner from within the automation tool, after the run is done, and/or aborted, no other tools can be launched until you exit and restart JV.

Well, I didn't have any problem with installing over .404 this time. And the Transparency Control works now, too.

So, at least in my case, you can cross those problems off your list, too.

Start Menu & Desktop tool (Vista)

I apparently had no broken shortcuts, so I created one on the desktop and one in the Start Menu.

Six bugs:

1. Broken desktop shortcut was not detected.

2. Backup dialog did not ask for a description (it used this default description: "Start Menu and Desktop tool").

3. Did detect the broken shortcut in the Start Menu, but also listed one by mistake and showed an incorrect file reference (see thumbnail).

4. Selecting that line and clicking Delete caused a valid shortcut to be deleted (it happened to be "Help and Support" but could be restored from the backup).

5. List had the two shortcut lines and 16 empty directories. Select all and Delete left some directories on the list although they had been deleted.

6. Some empty directories could not be deleted due to "Access is denied" from windows, but were backed up anyway. This is not a data integrity exposure since processes do not depend on the Start Menu (only users do). So this bug #6 is very trivial.

Registry Compactor, incorrect arithmetic in messages

Some of the "Size before/Size after" numbers are not consistent with figures shown in the message box.

The highlighted item is close enough. The other two shown in the message box are way off.

Added note: v.1.7.0.407 probably fixed the problem, but it is not a certainty -- my hives now had only KB differences and the problem involved MB arithmetic.

The status bar information present in v.1.7.0.399 does not show in the new GUI.

Start Menu & Desktop tool (Vista)

Apparently the tool leaves out C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ in its search. That folder makes up part of my Start Menu … and has several broken shortcuts according to CCleaner.

CCleaner found 24 broken shortcuts in that folder, and jv16 PowerTools v.1.4.1.248 found the same ones. : :

jv16 PowerTools v.1.7.0.405 found none of them. :

Directory Finder (Vista)

I attempted to list empty directories in C:\Windows (just curious, no action intended …).

Directories to find: *; or *.*; -- either produced the same result

Search in: C:\Windows -- of course

Search by size: Look only for … Directories that are … Smaller than … 1 B

All other tool tabs were not active …

Result: a few lines on the resulting list showed the presence of files. The screenshot (and use of "Explore") indicates there is a bug (or a Vista anomaly?) in this search …

All the files indicated in lines 3 through 8 are zero bytes in size, so that is OK. However, why are the first two lines on the list?

Added note: the two lines are not on the list when the same search is made on XP Pro...

Backup Tool - Useless list sort

When you first call the Backup Tool, it presents the list on the "Registry backups" tab with the most recent backup sorted first in the list (a good thing :) ).

However, when you do any of the following, the list sort reverts to a useless sort on the "ID" column:
1. Refresh the list (f5)

2. Click on the "File backups" tab

3. Then click on the "Registry backups" tab after examining some file backups

4. Do any combination of the above in any order
A more useful sort in all these cases would put the most recent backup first in the list.
