What is .bak_jv16pt Extension?

Using Vista Home Premium, jv16 PT 2007.

I have 8 files on my system that have an extension of .bak_jv16pt ranging in size from a few kbytes to 35 megabytes. They were all created on 8-June-07 which is probably the date I installed the first PT 2007. They have not been revised since that date.

They are located in the following folders:

C:\Boot

C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles

C:\Windows\System32\config

C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft

The names are:

System.bak_jv16pt

Software.bak_jv16pt

Security.bak_jv16pt

UsrClass.dat.bak_jv16pt

SAM.bak_jv16pt

NTUSER.Dat.bak_jv16pt (2 different locations)

COMPONENTS.bak_jv16pt

Any idea what these are for and can they be safely deleted?

Those are the registry hives that existed before you ran the PowerTools Registry Compactor.

It is safe to delete them after a windows restart.

Windows usually, perhaps always, will not let you delete them before the restart.
