Reg key erroneously removed

Hello, new JV 16 user here. :)

Just installed the program, and ran the Registry Cleaner.

Subsequently it turned out that it had erroneously removed the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Resplendence Sp

... and its subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Resplendence Sp\Registrar Registry Manager\Settings

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Resplendence Sp\Registrar Registry Manager\Undo

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Resplendence Sp\Registrar Registry Manager

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Resplendence Sp\RegBookmarks\Categories

I added 'registrar' and 'resplendence' to the ignore list, but I thought I should let you know anyway. :)

I actually have quite a similar problem:

when running the new registry cleaner (version 1.7.0.388), it gives me lots of errors of the type "obsolete software items" / "obsolete software entry", but most of these entries are connected with software which is actually installed on my computer and which is running well. It is NOT connected with removed software which has left traces in the registry!

The question is: is it a good idea to remove/fix these entries???

Sounds like a bad idea to me. Could you give examples of such items so I could find the problem to fix?

These are all pieces of software which are still installed on my computer and which are running well. I see these keys are empty, but still...

Registry Cleaner -- Inconsistent Identification of "Obsolete software entry"

Jv, because of this thread, I looked more closely and found the inconsistency described below:

1. The initial scan of my daughter's desktop (XP Pro) had, among other things, 174 "Obsolete software entry" lines

2. Most Lines were completely empty keys and subkeys (no data or entry name)

3. Two had nonexistent paths; some looked like configuration parameters ( …\Software\Helix\...) -- I removed them all

4. After reading this thread, I restored the backup and ran Registry Cleaner again

5. This time, there were only 120 "Obsolete software entry" lines

6. The " …\Software\Helix\..." items were not listed -- per regedit, they are back in the registry

7. All the items from the first scan that had data and/or an entry name are pasted at the end of this post.

8. I have the entries.reg from both the 174 and 120 item scans if you want them

In case it helps, it also removed this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Resplendence Sp\MultiMon\

Now that key isn't empty either, but, unlike Registrar Registry Manager, I no longer have MultiMon installed, so THAT key was indeed a leftover, and should be removed.

Could that possibly have prompted the Registry Cleaner to nuke the other subkeys as well?

I think there's a bug in the "Obsolete software scan" wherein it sometimes fails to recognize the presence of data in some subkeys … -- see my post about five back in this thread.

Added note: apparently it can also make an inconsistent decision if the keyname contains certain character strings. -- see the two posts after this one.

The structures are identical except for the keyname after "…\Software\..."

Registry Cleaner says "A Z NoneSuch.com" is an "Obsolete software entry" -- it doesn't show "A Z NoneSuch" …

It does not show if the "A NoneSuch.com" key name is changed to "A NoneSuch.aaa" or "A NoneSuch.a."

Registry Cleaner and "Obsolete software entry" -- an observation ...

The registry key, entry name, and data below show up on the Registry Cleaner list (2 lines) as an "Obsolete software entry."

The path is not valid, so that's probably the reason. If you change the path to a valid one, the 2 lines no longer show on the RC list.

You have to use RegEdit to make the change since Registry Cleaner Custom Fix has a bug that makes the change incorrectly … :(

Could you try these tests with the latest version of PowerTools? I tried some (for example the Helix entries) and the PowerTools didn't list them with the Obsolete Software module.

Got to it sooner than I expected ...

Registry Cleaner v.1.7.0.403 (using with XP Pro)

Regarding the first .reg set (Helix, MadOnion, Explorer): the Helix items do not show (not a bug now), the other two do show. The mystery is why the Helix items showed as errors the one time -- but it's not reproducible …

Regarding the second .reg set (NoneSuch and NoneSuch.com identical structures): same result as described in the earlier post (this is a bug) …

Regarding the third .reg set (the A NoneSuch.com structure): the structure shows as an error whether suffixed .com, .aaa, .a, or .edu (no longer a bug) …

I tried to reproduce the problem but everything worked as it should - if these paths exists the software are not listed as obsolete, if they don't exist the software is listed as obsolete.

However, I was able to reproduce the NoneSuch and NoneSuch.com problem and it will be fixed in the next version.
