I received the following error (am running a 30-day trial of jv16 PowerTools 2006):

Error! Failed to compact "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE"

while running the Registry Compactor. I was able to successfully run Registry Cleaner with no problems...

Any thoughts on how to get around this problem? The hive "size before" is 42752.00KB in size according to Registry Compactor.

Hello Chansw,

First of all. welcome to this forum.

I have to say that, that registry is very large.

I suggest that you close every program currently active.

Don't forget those programs running in you system tray.

If this doesn't solve the problem.

Try to close/disable your Anti-Virus and/or Firewall software.

From day one of PT's Registry Compactor, I've been getting the same error on my laptop for the SYSTEM hive. I get a similar symptom with several other utilities (ERUNT, NTREGOPT, Regcompact.net, RootKitRevealer, for example), so it's not PT, but the registry hive itself. The system runs fine for all functions anyway, so the error (whatever it is) is not a show-stopper. So far I'm "getting around" the problem by "just living with it." Still looking for other approaches ...

A suggestion to try for both.

Try to run the Compacter in safe-mode.

If this works, then there is some application which blocks/locks it.

@Tullik: It could be ZoneAlarm, but i think you already tryed to fully disable it. If not try that.
