Hi,

I just got an idea for a new feature for JV 16 PT 2007:

when uninstalling a piece of software with jv16 (via the Software Manager), it would be fine if the software was also automatically remove from the "open with" menu and this kind of stuff.

Is that possible? Because I normally often have to do this manually.

Hi jv16,

I think it would also be a good idea if jv16 PT 2007 was able to check the integrity of the "Open with" menus en likes (and repair it like it does with the Start Menu), even when you're not removing software (because software that is ALREADY removed may have left trace in menus etc).

Cleaning the Open with menu automatically is very difficult since the entries usually only contain the name of the executable (e.g. "Acrobat.exe"), but not its path (e.g. "c:\program files\adobe\acrobat\").

Therefore it's more or less impossible to automatically clean the Open with menu with a good accuracy.

OK, I understand.

But it may be possible to let PT 2007 search for the executable: if it doesn't exist anymore, then the "Open with" menu item can be removed.

Of course, PT 2007 should warn the user that searching may take some time... what do you think?

JV.. That shouldn't be that hard to check for.

If it only has an application name and no path, then it should be in one of the PATH envirioment locations OR it should be in the registry located here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths.

Now i don't know this for sure. But i never encounterd pathless executables anywhere else.

I first explain the problem:

I've got some programs installed on my computer which start automatically on the background when Windows starts (so as to be available when needed, I suppose!) like QuickTime of things like that. The problem is that I don't use QuickTime that often, and by starting automatically, QuickTime uses some precious mega bytes in my RAM. The first solution I thought of was unchecking QuickTime (and likes) in the Startup Manager, but when I happen to use QuickTime once again, the program re-enables itself in the Startup list, and starts using my precious RAM again on the following startups!!!

You see what the problem is?

Now I though of this: with the Automation tool of jv16, it would be possible to uncheck QuickTime (and likes) automatically on each startup, so I don't need to keep an eye on it!

So I think we need 2 new kinds of tasks in the Automation tool: (1) automatically uncheck a program from the Startup list on startup (2) automatically remove a program from the Startup list on startup

You could also go to Start>Run and there type msconfig Look, then for a tab named Start and manually uncheck the QT entry. Save the changes and restart.

Google can help you a little more about it: "msconfig", "msconfig quicktime", "msconfig quicktime start up" are some examples you could use.

I don't know how useful this feature would be in the PT series, either.

Hi,

I've got a new idea for jv PT 2007: what about adding a small knowledge base to PT 2007, in order to help the user interpret what he/she finds?

I give an example:

when I make a search with PT through the registry, I quite often find keys with identical names (like '@' or '{KEY}' or 'a') which mean nothing to me.

But I can imagine '@' does make sense to an experienced user (like: '@' is a dummy value, or '@' means ... whatever).

If values like '@' make sense to experienced users, what about adding this knowledge to PT 2007??

Thinking of a way to implement this in PT 2007: when the Registry Cleaner/Finder show their results, you could make the values like '@' clickable, in such a way that when clicking on it, the user gets a small pop-up saying "@ is generally a dummy value." or wathever.

The ability to add entires for the New file section of the Registry Manager. There are a couple of file types I would like to add to the right click new menu but I don't want to have to troll through the registry to do it, so it would be a useful feature.
