Alcohol 120% - Reg cleaner overambitious?

To install an update of Alcohol 120%, you first have to uninstall the old version.

I found out that the uninstalling of Alcohol 120% is no longer performed propoperly after a reg clean up job of jv16PT (1.5.0.277). Most of the Alcohol files are not deleted from Program Files folder. Also the driver is still there. As a result the update can not be installed but ends in weird error reports.

Had the registry not been cleaned with jv16PT, the uninstall/install of Alcohol would have gone without a problem.

This reproduces any time as I keep an (uncleaned) image from my C: drive.

This was already also the case with the old versoin of jvPT 1.4.1.248!

Is this a problem of jvPT or of Alcohol120%?

Anyone knows?

I Had the same problem. But this wasn't related to PowerTools.

Becouse that system doesn't had PowerTools or any registry cleaner at all.

I Had to remove the files manualy and after that used RegCleaner to search and remove the left-overs.

Sorry. I am talking about the impact of the registry cleaner of jv16PT on the uninstalling of Alcohol120%. Anyone shares my experience?

That's a problem with Alcohol 120% it will give an error 25001/25002 or some stupid thing like that, even if you correctly uninstall/reboot etc. You have to manually delete the drivers from the registry and the root directory or choose advanced install and name the drivers whatever you like and it will install correctly.

My point is that if I hadn't cleaned up with the Reg Clean, the uninstall of Alcohol would have gone right. So who is to blame?

As Johnp and myself already said (If i understand JohnP correctly). As far as i know it doesn't has to do with Cleaning the registry at all.

It is an problem of Alcohol it self.

Becouse when i uninstall the older version (on a clean system without reg-cleaning), and then want to install the newer version, it comes with an error that there already are drivers installed with the same name etc...

So to awnser your question, even if you used a Reg Cleaner or not, the problem could/would have occured aniway.

So the blam, in my opinion goes to Alcohol Software.

The renaming driver thing has, in my opinion nothing to do with the fact that the uninstall of Alcohol goes wrong once you have done a reg clean.

Something must have been removed that shouldn't be removed. I'm not blaming PowerTools by default but I wonder if any other user shares the experience that too much is removed from the registry on a cleanup job.

That to much has been removed can be. This becouse some keys seem to be invalide but they are needed for that program, that is why PowerTools has an whitelist/ignorelist of entries that should be kept in the registry.

I Had this problem with Jasc Paint Shop Pro for instans, and since PowerTools has those in the ignorelist/whitelist nothing is wrong anymore.

The renaming for the driver of Alcohol is a bug of Alcohol, and has nothing to do with any registry cleaning etc..

So I guess for me the question is:

Which entry(ies) of Alcohol should have been kept by in this whitelist.

And how to put them in this list.

There is nothing to add to the Ignore/Whitelist. It is an bug of Alcohol.

I Tested it a few times now, 2 times without registry cleaning and 2 times with registry cleaning.

I rebooted every time after the install and uninstall and registry cleaning.

I Don't get the error message at all. I can cleanly install Alcohol every time, registry cleaned or not.

The only time it goes wrong is when you do not reboot after (un)install of Alcohol. This i tryed also, and then it went wrong. After that i had to manualy remove some files and clean the registry, after that i could install Alcohol again.

So problem is with Alcohol (un)installer.

So there is nothing that PowerTools/RegSupreme(Pro) did to break the (un)installer of Alcohol.

You're right BlackDex, if for some reason Alcohol is not uninstalled correctly (see:http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=102523) it will come up with error messages and you will not be able to install it unless you get rid of the driver entries.

I have noticed that some programs have problems with uninstalling, it can be due to faulty software.

One thing I have found useful is this program.

Your Uninstaller, its fantastic, and will uninstall everything. One good thing to do is to try "reinstalling software" then uninstall it with "Your uninstaller" its available as a trail with no major limitations.

Thanks all for your considerations. I do the uninstall from now on of Alcohol manually.

Actually jv16 PowerTools (1.4x and 2005) don't completely remove many software entries from the registry. I think it's because many software items are tied too deeply into the registry and it would be a gamble to remove small 'leftover' entries like single trees...

Check out several software items you recently removed with jv16 PowerTools - go to regedit and search for the name or publisher name or a combination of both, chances are you will find at least one or two lingering items in there that relate too it. Anyway I think it's by design this way more than anything, but the PowerTools DO manage to get rid of many entries that the Win Add/Remove utility would simply not be able to do.

@dzjepp, it indeed doesn't and can't remove every leftover.

This becouse some entries you can't be sure of if it will be safe to remove or not. Also, some other programs, like some Anti-Virus software save some of those entries like a default location etc.. and PowerTools won't remove it.

But i surly removes a lot of other crap that is leftover in the registry.

It has helped me alot with some programs that doesn't want to install, and after a registry clean it does :). So im gona stick with Macecraft software .
