Install the new version over the latest

I tried to install PowerTools 2006 (one of the first releases) over my PowerTools 2005.

Luckily for me I made a back-up of the PowerTools 2005 first.

My problem was that all the data, Age and Comments I had type in the Software Manager was overwritten/deleted by PowerTools 2006.

Will this still happens or is the problem solved?

Hello Dennis,

Here the official installation note:

"The jv16 PowerTools 2006 can be installed over the latest version of jv16 PowerTools 2005 but not over any earlier version. If you update from PT 2005 you will lose all of your registry snapshots created by the Registry Monitor but you won't lose any of your backups."

So normally this should not happen.

Hello Dennis,

Sorry I overlooked your remark about "Age and Comments".

Well you are right at the point that PT 2006 don't show anymore the age and comment data created with PT 2005 - so it seems that they are lost.

But I did a simulation and I realized that the data are still in the correspondant .dat file in the Settings folder.

So we have to ask "jv" if this is a "bug" or if this is by design : !

I just installed 2005 to a separate directory, turned on the Age & Comment systems, and made a few changes to the SWM list to see what happened.

Both 2005 and 2006 store the Age & Comment information in the AgeCommentSys_SoftManager.dat file in the Settings directory. In 2005 however, each line has a prefix of "SoftwareManagerForm." while 2006 lines do not have any prefix.

For example, 2005 has this comment line: SoftwareManagerForm.Mozilla.Mozilla=Test 1

But 2006 has this line: mozilla.mozilla=Testing 1

Check your AgeCommentSys_SoftManager.dat with notepad. Perhaps the old information is still there. (?)

Even if it is there and you felt like trying a copy and paste recovery, all comments probably can not be recovered since the list contents changed between 2005 and 2006. I believe this was by design to remove extraneous items from the list.

With 2005, my SWM list has 303 items.

With 2006, it has 128 items.

I see that jepe just confirmed the information could still be there, so if you use notepad Edit...Replace to remove the SoftwareManagerForm. prefix, you might have your comments back very quickly.

But possibly not all of them because of the difference in the 2005 and 2006 lists.
