Main Screen Went Black

Strange, but when I open PT 2005 the screen is now black. I can see the icons only, & if I want to know what they are, I have to hang the mouse cursor over them. All other features are normal.

I have uninstalled & reinstalled but there is no change. This just began a short time ago.

Is this a signal from you that it is time to upgrade?

Well, I think the easiest thing to do is to update to jv16 PowerTools 2005. Do notice that this is an update, not an upgrade. In other words: if you have purchased jv16 PowerTools 2005 you can update to 2006 without any fees or costs.

I don't use jv16 anymore since the black background gui appeared. It's just too hard figuring out what the icons do, since I have to hover over each one to get the underlying text. Even then it's hard to see.

I just tried it again for the first time in many months & nothing has changed. (This was a total reinstall.) No available updates, either.

Is the background behind the icons on the opening screen supposed to be black? The text below the icons must also be black, since it's invisible until I select the icon.

Is there a View setting I am missing?

Normally the window has black text on white background. What "theme" are you using in Windows?

Unfortunately, you are correct. Reverting to the classic theme solves the problem.

I say 'unfortunately' because my theme is only a slightly modified version of the XP theme. Only sizes are changed; there are no color modifications involved. I rebuilt my theme from scratch and once again the background gui went black. If another of the more than 200 programs I have installed exhibited the same problem, I might be willing to blame MS or (horrors!) even me, but since this is a unique occurrence with jv16 I have to believe there is a programming bug here.

I also tried jv16 2006 & I got the same results.

Thanks for the response; at least now I have a better idea of the problem. I'll check back in 2007 & let you know how things are going. Meanwhile, I guess it's Registry First Aid for now.

What modifications have you done to the XP theme exactly?

After checking a bit, it turns out I don't need to modify the "Windows XP" theme at all. The problem occurs as soon as I select it. Perhaps there is a problem on my end, either with the XP theme or a color table. Strange that it only affects this particular piece of software.
